Another food post? Well, I don’t mean to be a food blogger (although I would like to), but it’s Ramadan, as a college student with a broken stove, I can’t help but trying to search for food for the night. And this time, I went to a place called Suki ‘n Friends. Since it’s located in downtown Bandung, I thought I’d give it a go.

The Place:

I arrived at Suki ‘n Friends a little bit late for breaking the fast, I think it was about 18.25 (UTC + 7). The reason is because Bandung traffic was absolutely horrible. I suggest if you live uptown from Bandung and you want to break the fast here, you should hit the road much earlier. But nevertheless, there were still plenty of parking spots for me, and since I came late, there were no queue at the buffet.

The restaurant itself was not too big, plenty of tables with stoves on them, and if you see all the tables are occupied, don’t worry, there’s still 2nd floor, where more tables were available. Although not very spacey, the furniture were well-arranged, so it made the rooms had wide spaces to walk around, therefore suitable for small or big family. And the ambiance was perfect. not too bright, made the dinner more relaxing and enjoyable.

The Food:

Suki ‘n Friends uses buffet system for their place. Before you pay to the cashier, you first pick the items you want and put them in a tray. I myself picked quite a handful of items, such as Sliced Beef, Sliced Chicken, Broccoli, Shrimp Tofu, Crab Stick, Bean Curd, Bok Choy (Pakcoy), Banana Fish, Skin Tofu Roll, Crab Claw, Siomay, Money Bags, two bowls of Rice, and two glasses of Thai Tea. All of them costed me IDR 149500 (IDR 164450 after tax). And luckily, they accept debit card for BCA and Mandiri, and any credit card with Visa and MasterCard logo (for minimum purchase of IDR 200000).

Because I picked my own items, I didn’t have to wait for the waiters. It was also convenient because the soup was already boiling and the grill was sizzling with fire under it. Actually, I had to wait for one thing, the Thai Tea. The cashier said the waiters will bring it because they were currently refilling it. But that’s okay. I wouldn’t go for the drink first anyway. So, first thing first, I went for my favorite part of ‘cook your own meal’, grill some meat.

The meat, both chicken and beef were sliced beautifully thin, so it took only over a minute for the chicken to be cooked, and only about fifty second for the beef (since I prefer my beef a little rare). After the meat is cooked, three different sauces were waiting. Suki sauce, Tom Yam sauce, and Salty sauce. I dipped my slice of beef into the Salty sauce first, and for me, it tasted a little too salty, maybe the Salty sauce was meant to be mixed with the soup, I don’t know. But the other two sauces were great. The Tom Yam sauce was a little bit sour, and the Suki sauce tended to be sweeter. Both were perfect to be eaten with rice, which was warm and fluffy, made it easier for me to eat it with chopsticks.

Grilling meat was actually a good activity to wait for the soup to simmer. And when it did simmer, I immediately throw my dumplings, processed meats, and seafood to the boiling soup. But I couldn’t resist to taste the soup first. For me, the soup was great. Not too salty or strong with spices, and I think I could taste the fish stock or chicken stock in there. And if you like your soup salty, that’s what the salty sauce were for. And if you throw the ingredients to the soup, make sure the meats and seafood go in first, because they need to cook perfectly. And for the vegetables, they only need to be inside the soup for a few seconds, so they still have the crunchy texture.

After my ingredients ready, I poured some of them to a smaller bowl. This was handy for a couple of reasons: first, so you could season your own soup without ruining the main soup pot. And second: this stopped the cooking process of your meats and veggies, so they wouldn’t overcook.

It’s time for me to taste. After I seasoned the soup with a little Salty (which later I think was just a soy sauce) sauce, I took a bite for each ingredients in my bowl. And thank God I cooked it quite well. The Bok Choy and Broccoli were crunchy and still had their flavors. The dumplings (Money Bag) had a soft texture to it, and had a flavorful filling of minced beef. The tofu was silky smooth, processed Crab and Fish meat were also flavorful, and perfectly tender.

The Beverage:

I had to admit, all the serving at this Suki ‘n Friends gave my stomach the fullness and the satisfaction. And for the last journey, I tried to rinse my throat with a glass of Thai Tea, which in my opinion, just okay, better than nothing. But that didn’t spoil my satisfaction for the dishes. So, I do recommend this place if you have a craving for Suki meal and don’t want to spend too much money.
