It’s been a few days since I left Bandung. Now I’m in my hometown, Padang for the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which will be celebrate at June 6th this year. Although it’s only a couple days left, I’m still able to find the time to meet with my friend, like yesterday, when my friends and I were breaking a fast together.

Breaking a fast with friends is always a tricky business, at least for me. It is because finding a place to eat in Ramadan when with friends requires a place with delicious food, plenty of parking space, not too crowded, has a place for salat (Muslim prayer), and last but not least, relatively low price.

Luckily, a friend recommended a place to me, which I immediately agreed, because by his description, it has all of the requirements I mentioned above: HD Resto Padang.

The Place

HD Resto Padang is located in a not very busy street, so it has lot of parking space. Not only that, because the street has a really low traffic (at least when I was there), I could eat without disturbed by cars or bikes sounds. In addition, HD Resto Padang played Indonesia 90’s pop music playlist, which I thought was very cool.

The interior itself was pretty unique. Part of HD Resto Padang is a Carwash. When the night comes, part of the carwash would lit with colorful decorative lamps, and voilà! A half restaurant is ready to be used.

HD Resto Padang is basically divided into two section, a non-smoking room with AC, and an outdoor smoking room. The AC one is the room where the all you can eat buffet located, where the non-smoking room is placed outside, in the carwash and close from cashier and dessert stand.

The Food

HD Resto Padang actually has many types of food to offer, such as Bakmi (Indonesian stir-fried egg noodles), crabs, shrimps, and Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice). But because they have Ramadan special menu, the ‘All you can eat’, I guess I’ll only review it.

Rice

HD Resto Padang - Rice HD Resto Padang, All You Can Eat Buffet - Review HD Resto Padang, All You Can Eat Buffet – Review HD Resto Padang Rice 1024x576
HD Resto Padang – Rice, perfect texture and taste

First of all, the rice. It was a typical rice that can be found in Padang, called Bareh Solok. The rice was not fluffy and sticky, but more like the basmatti rice, with softer texture and shorter grains. Also the rice was very fragrant and natural sweet taste.

Kwetiau

Kwetiau or kwetiaw is a type of noodle made of rice flour originated from China and modified by local culture of many areas in South East Asia. And in HD Resto Padang, available Kwetiau to eat as much as you want is Kwetiau Goreng, which is Kwetiau noodles stir-fried with spices and sauce, similar to Nasi Goreng, with addition of Kecap Manis (sweet soy sauce) and topped with crispy shallots.

Chicken Katsu

Nothing very special here. It was just a regular chicken katsu. But after my first bite, I realised something. This Chicken Katsu had a little difference, it was a little bit thicker than regular ones. And this slightly thickness made significant change. It made the Katsu tasted a lot juicier.

Grilled Chicken

Next meal I wanted to put on my plate was Grilled Chicken. But they didn’t serve the traditional Minang-style Grilled Chicken which is usually grilled with coconut milk mixture. Instead, Grilled Chicken in HD Resto Padang was grilled with sweet soy sauce mixture brushed on the surface. And if I’m allowed to guess, I guess the chicken parts were pre-cooked before they were grilled, because the chicken were perfectly cooked in the inside and I could taste the spices even in the thickest part of the chicken.

Bakwan

HD Resto Padang - Bakwan HD Resto Padang, All You Can Eat Buffet - Review HD Resto Padang, All You Can Eat Buffet – Review HD Resto Padang Bakwan 1024x576

Bakwan is vegetables, Usually carrot, cabbage, and sometimes bean sprouts mixed in batter, and then deep-fried. Bakwan is actually more like a snack rather than a full meal. But that didn’t stop me to take a couple of them and put it in my plate. And to be honest, this was one of the best bakwans I’ve ever tried. The batter was well-salted, vegetables were tender but somehow still crunchy. And because they shaped the batter a little thin, the Bakwan was cooked all the way through. And did I mention that it was very crispy?

Capcay

Next, is vegetables. The last piece of the puzzle to make a healthy meal. The vegetables served by HD Resto Padang is Capcay. Capcay is mix of veggies, typically cauliflowers, bokcoy, carrots, lettuce, and mushroom. Then they are mixed with shallots, garlics, pepper, and a splash of chicken stock. The Capcay that I ate at HD Resto Padang had a little thicker gravy in it. I guess they put a pinch of corn starch in there as well. But after all, the Capcay was good.

Sauce – Condiments – Pickles

One of the rules to eat in Indonesia: you can’t eat anything without sambal. And thank God HD Resto Padang realised it. At the end of the buffet, they served four bowls, filled with sauce/condiments and pickled cucumber.
The sauce and condiments were divided into three bowls: Spicy-sweet Soy Sauce, Chili Sauce, and Sambal. Soy Sauce is for people who like a little bit sweetness in their sauce, Chili is for the ones who likes it extra hot and smooth, and the last is Sambal, for them who like sauce with medium spiciness and roughly grounded chili texture.

The Beverages

HD Resto Padang serves a lot of beverages in their menu, such as juice, milkshake, etc. But for the ‘all you can eat’ package, they only offer about four kinds of drink: Iced Milk Tea, Iced Tea, Iced Green Tea, and Grass Jelly Drink. All of the beverages were already served in plastic cups, so you don’t have to pour it yourself. All of the drinks were sweet and refreshing, very appropriate to restore your blood sugar after fasting a whole day. If there’s any downside, it was because the drinks were already served, when it was the time to break the fast, some of the drinks were already watered down.

Dessert – Ice Pan Ice Cream

Dessert is not included in the ‘all you can eat’ package at HD Resto Padang. But luckily, if you’re willing to spend a little more money, you can just ordered it right away. I myself, I was too full to order any dessert. But my friend, he ordered a cup of what’s called “Ice Pan Ice Cream”. This is a type of ice cream originated from China. It’s made by pouring mixture of ice cream liquid into an extremely cold plate.

Then they spread the mixture and mix it with fruits to flavor. And then when the mixture is frozen, they scrape it into rolls, serve into a cup, and top it with desired toppings. The Ice Pan Ice Cream was sweet and delicious, the even stuck a syringe filled with condensed milk for me to drizzle.

Expenses

  • All You Can Eat package: IDR 50000
  • Tax (10%): IDR 5000
  • Ice Pan Ice Cream: IDR 20000
  • Parking Service: IDR: 4000

Conclusion

HD Resto Padang is a great place to eat, wether you’re on a budget or not. They have various menu with various prices. Especially when you’re on a tight budget, the ‘all you can eat’ package is a wonderful choice. Just make sure you’re really hungry before eat to get a full experience 😀
